Research Research

Postgraduate research in statistics and probability offers the opportunity to develop statistical and probabilistic expertise, involving practical, mathematical and computing skills, while working on challenging and important problems with substantial real-world applications. It offers excellent career prospects, in academia as well as in other environments such as industry, government and support of actuarial and medical work. The statistics and probability group at Durham offers an excellent atmosphere for research on many interesting topics, and the group continues to grow. The City of Durham offers a unique location to live and work, with all University buildings on, or very close to the peninsula formed by the river Wear, on which the city centre is located. The Cathedral and Castle, on the peninsula, together are a World Heritage Site.

Financial Information

For UK students, the main source of financial support for postgraduate studies are EPSRC grants. If you wish to apply for such a grant then contact Pauline Coolen-Schrijner as soon as possible, preferably by the end of December in the year before you want to begin your studies. Normally, we would expect you to have a first class honours degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or a related topic. For overseas students, appropriate funding may be more difficult to find. However, on some occasions we may have alternative sources for financial support, so do contact us if you are interested in postgraduate work in our group. For outstanding students there is a limited number of teaching assistantships available.

Further information on financial support, as well as on fees, is available from the page Fees and Finance, centrally maintained by The University of Durham, and on the general postgraduate information pages from our Department of Mathematical Sciences, under Funding.
