The Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham University, organizes a workshop on principles and methods of statistical inference with interval probability, jointly with the interval probability research group of Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich. The workshop runs from Monday 12 May until Friday 16 May 2008.

The theory of interval probability (also called imprecise probability) generalizes classical probability theory, by quantifying uncertainty via lower and upper probabilities. This provides exciting opportunities and challenges for development of theory and methods for statistical inference and decision support, which will be the main focus of activities in this workshop. For more information, see the webpages of the Society for Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications.

The Monday will be a day of research presentations aimed at a general audience. Each of the other four days will be focused on a specific topic, with introductions to research results and ideas presented by leading experts during the mornings, and free time in the afternoons explicitly aimed to work on these topics. There will be a follow-up workshop in Munich in 2009, where progress on these topics will be reported. Ultimately the aim is to organize this workshop annually. The programme has more details about exact topics and speakers.

Everyone, including PhD students, is welcome to participate and/or to present their views on one or more of the above topics, on one or more days! If you want to join the workshop, please send an email to Frank Coolen ( with a brief explanation of your intended contribution, before Friday 18 April 2008. We ask a small fee of 10 pounds for covering the costs of the lunch at the Department on the first day, to be paid on the Monday morning.

If you want more information, please contact Frank Coolen or Matthias Troffaes.
