| The display of the 20th to 21st June this year became visible as soon as it was dark enough and lingered until the dawn got too bright to observe them! However, between 00:00BST and 01:30BST they were really quite spectacular, showing undulating waves and bright streaks. They were still quite low, no more than 15 degrees or so high but were extensive in azimuth, perhaps 70 degrees from the NNE to the NW.
I walked up to a good location, met some friends to enjoy the display with and took these photos. Immediately below is a panomara of the scene. |
| The display was initially brightest to the NW where there was a complicated bright, pale blue / pale green band. |
| Toward Durham cathedral there was another large bright area. The bright star Capella is visible to the left. |
| The deep orange extending up a few degrees from the horizon is (street)light polluted murk in the lowest part of the atmosphere, but it actually makes a nice colour compliment. |
| Capella again. |
| Undulating noctilucent clouds like these are the most commonly observed. |
| The dark tropospheric clouds make a good contrast with the shining noctilucent clouds many miles in altitude above them. |
