Studying the effects of lateral heterogeneity on the seismic wave using the Indirect Boundary Element Method

Abstract

A code was developed to generate synthetic seismograms using the Indirect Boundary Element Method (IBEM). Seismograms were generated from simple earth models containing rough layers and compared to similar models with smooth layers at a number of different frequencies. Results suggest that roughs layers can have a considerable effect on the seismic wave, though this is strongly dependent on the wavelength of the rugosity compared to that of the source.
