Travel to DurhamThe general Durham University travel guide and the Mathematical Sciences Department travel guide both have useful information about getting to Durham.
Rail informationThe UK RAILWAYs on the Net site contains links for train timetables. Information on ticket types and prices (as well as train times) can be found here (click on the link for ALL UK TICKETS - BOOK).
A taxi (cab) from Durham railway station to Grey College should cost roughly £3 pounds.
Travel via a London airport and then by train from London King's Cross to DurhamLondon's airports are (reasonably enough) some distance from the centre of town. Don't take a taxi (cab) into London from the airport. It could take a very long time and be very expensive.
The London rail/underground map will give you an idea of where things are.
If you come via Heathrow, the fastest way to get to King's Cross
station is via the Heathrow Express to Paddington Station, and
then to take the Underground or a taxi to King's Cross.
If you come via Gatwick, the railway station is by the South Terminal. There is a shuttle bus from the North Terminal. There are two alternative routes into London.
The journey from London Kings Cross to Durham takes about 3
hours and appears to cost about £80 for a "saver"
return ticket. It is normally much cheaper to get a return ticket
rather than two one-way tickets for mainline rail travel in the UK, but
you will need to check travel restrictions when you buy your ticket.
Travel via Newcastle or Teesside airportsFrom Newcastle you can take the metro to Newcastle rail station, followed by train to Durham (and a taxi to Grey College). This should cost roughly £15 - £20 return in total. You can get detailed timetable information (from Newcastle airport to Durham) here by clicking on "Journey Planner" and filling in the details. You can buy the Metro ticket from Tourist Information at the airport, or a machine (needs coins). It looks like it is £1.80 one-way. The train ticket costs £3.40 one-way (buy at station).
A taxi from Newcastle aiport to Durham costs about £30 one-way.
From Teesside take a taxi to Durham. It should cost about £25 one-way.
